People’s Association’s Inaugural Community Lead Champions 2010
PA wants more youths to come forward to serve the community
Singapore needs to continuously nurture the next generation of grassroots leaders to ensure that the social fabric remains strong and people are bonded.
In its inaugural launch of the community lead champions, held on 12 June 2010 to honour grassroot leaders, coined “Community Lead Champions” for their contributions in grooming the next generation. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Lim Boon Heng, noted that a key factor would be getting more youth volunteers to serve the community.
Mr Lim added that grassroots organisations may need to improve their image to attract the youth. 654 grassroots leaders known as Community LEAD Champions were honoured for their contributions in grooming the next generation
Speaking at the People’s Association Community Lead Champion Awards ceremony on Saturday, Mr Lim urged these leaders to engage the youth. To get more youths involved, Mr Lim noted that the People’s Association may need to improve its image.
He said: “We want to tap the ideas of the people. So we will have to convey to the young that the PA’s grassroots organisations are means for them to achieve what they want, not what they perceive as what the government wants.”
Following the speech by Minister Lim Boon Heng, Professor Foo Check Teck, Chairman and Founder of Sun Tzu Art of War Institute (STI), was invited to share his views on Community leadership through the lens of Sun Tzu Art of War stratagem.
In his presentation, Professor Foo shares his experience of community spirit, relating the “Art of Leadership” and its importance in anchoring the society against external negative forces.
He added that Sun Tzu Art of war principles in community leadership is extremely critical towards getting the youths to step forward as volunteers in the grassroots organisations.
He further elaborate on one chapter of Art of War and showcase how these principles is reflected in geopolitical, business, sports and community context and leadership renewal is one of the most important aspect to keep winning. It is important to attract the youth in understanding what they’re passionate about.
Angela Goh, leader, Marsiling Community LEAD Champion Team, said: When we have the online website for Marsiling, we specially put a column, what is your interest?. From there, we tag on to their needs and put them to the proper sub—committees or committees that they want to be in.
Most want to help the needy families and some are very interested to get involved in children’s programmes.” Knowing what they love to do and giving them the opportunity to try is what attract them. This is Art of War.
